Abstract:Thetimedomainharmonicbalancemethodisanattractivereducedordermethodofanalyzingunsteadyflowforturbomachines.However,themethodcanadmitnon-physicalsolutions.Non-physicalsolutionswereencounteredfromathree-blade-rowcompressorconfigurationinatimedomainharmonicbalanceanalysis.Thispaperaimstoinvestigatetherootcauseofthenon-physicalsolutions.Theinvestigationinvolvesseveralstrategies,whichincludeincreasingthenumberofharmonics,increasingthenumberoftimeinstants,includingscatteredmodes,includingtherotor-rotorinteraction,andtheuseofanewmethod-theapproximatetimedomainnonlinearharmonicmethod.Numericalanalysespertinenttoeachstrategyarepresentedtorevealtherootcauseofthenon-physicalsolution.Itisfoundthatthenonlinearinteractionofunsteadyflowcomponentswithdifferentfundamentalfrequenciesisthecauseofthenon-physicalsolution.Thenon-physicalsolutioncanbeeliminatedbyincorporatingextrascatteredmodesorusingtheapproximatetimedomainnonlinearharmonicmethod.
