Abstract:Theultimatestrengthofplatingsundercompressionisoneofthemostimportantfactorstobeaddressedintheshipdesign.CurrentRulesforshipstructuraldesigngenerallyprovideexplicitstrengthcheckcriteriaagainstbucklingforsimplysupportedandclampedplatings.Nevertheless,shipplatingsgenerallyexhibitanintermediatebehaviourbetweenthesimplesupportandtheclampedconditions,whichimpliesthatthetorsionalstiffnessofsupportingmembersshouldbedulyconsidered.Hence,themainaimofthisstudyisthedevelopmentofnewdesignformulasfortheultimatestrengthofplatingsunderuniaxialcompression,withshortand/orlongedgeselasticallyrestrainedagainsttorsion.Inthisrespect,twobenchmarkstudiesareperformed.Theformerisdevotedtothedevelopmentofnewequationsfortheelasticbucklingcoefficientsofplatingswithedgeselasticallyrestrainedagainsttorsion,basedontheresultsoftheeigenvaluebucklinganalysis,performedbyAnsysMechanicalAPDL.Thelatterinvestigatestheultimatestrengthofplatingswithelasticallyrestrainededges,bysystematicallyvaryingtheplateslendernessratioandthetorsionalstiffnessofsupportingmembers.Finally,theeffectivenessofthenewformulationischeckedagainstawidenumberoffiniteelement(FE)simulations,tocovertheentiredesignspaceofshipplatings.
