Abstract:ToachievehydrodynamicdesignexcellenceinAutonomousUnderwaterVehicles(AUVs)largelydependsontheaccuratepredictionofliftanddragforces.ThestudypresentsComputationalFluidDynamics(CFD)-basedliftanddragestimationsofanoveltorpedo-shapedflight-styleAUVwithbow-wings.Thehorizontalbow-wingsareprovidedtoaccommodatetheelectromagneticarraysusedtoperformthecabledetectionandtrackingoperationsneartheseabed.ThehydrodynamicperformanceoftheAUVduetoadditionofthesehorizontalbow-wingsisrequiredtobeinvestigated,particularlyattheinitialdesignstage.Hence,CFDtechniquesareemployedtocomputetheliftanddragforcesobservedbytheflight-styleAUV,maneuveringunderwateratdifferentanglesofattackandvaryingspeeds.TheReynolds-AveragedNavier-StokesEquations(RANSE)closureisachievedbyemployingthemodifiedk-?modelandTwo-ScaleWallFunction(2-SWF)approachisusedforboundarylayertreatment.Further,thestudyalsohighlightstheuniquemeshrefinementandsolution-adaptivemeshingtechniquestoperformtheCFDsimulationsinSolidworksFlowSimulation(SWFS)environment.Thedragpolarcurveforflight-styleAUVwithandwithoutbow-wingsisgeneratedusingthecomputedliftanddragcoefficients.ThecurveprovidedessentialinsightsforachievinghydrodynamicallyefficientandoptimizedAUVdesign.Fromthedragpolarcurve,itisrevealedthatduetohorizontalbow-wings,theflight-styleAUViscapabletogeneratehigherliftwithlessdragandthus,itgivesbetterlift-to-dragratiocomparedtotheAUVwithoutbow-wings.Moreover,simulatedresultsofaxialdragobservedbytheAUVhavealsobeencomparedwithfree-runningexperimentalresultsandarefoundingoodagreement.
