InordertomeetevermorestringentCO2emissionstargets,OEMsaredevelopingnewtechnologyandenginedesigns.Turbocharged,gasolinedirectinjection(TGDI)enginesaremoreefficientandproducesignificantpoweratlowerenginespeedscomparedtonaturallyaspiratedengineswithequivalentdisplacement.Toensurelubricantsmaintaindurabilityandcleanlinessinthisnewhardware,performancetestsdesignedtominimizethefrequencyoflowspeedpre-ignition(LSPI),adestructivetypeofabnormalcombustionobservedinhighlyboostedengines,hasbeenintroducedintotheGMdexos1TM:2015specificationandwillbeacceptedintoILSACGF-6.OverbaseddetergentshavebeenidentifiedaskeylubricantcomponentsthatimpactLSPI.Asaconsequence,detergentsystemsusedinmanycommercialproductswillneedtobemodifiedtoreduceLSPIfornextgenerationoils.Thechoiceofdetergentchemistrydesignedtoensureprotectionagainstlubricant-inducedLSPImayadverselyaffectfueleconomyperformancemeasuredintheSequenceVIenginetest.Thispaperexplorestheeffectofincreasingoverbasedmagnesiumsulfonatedetergentinafinishedfluidonpredictedfreshoilfueleconomyimprovement.WefurtherdemonstratetheimpactofdetergentchangesonfueleconomyperformanceintheSequenceVIEenginetest.Finally,theinfluenceofformulationmodificationsonnormalizedLSPIfrequencyaswellaspredictedfueleconomyperformanceisdiscussed.
