Comparedtopurebatteryelectricvehicles(BEV),plug-in-hybridelectricvehicles(PHEV)havetheadvantageofintroducingbothemission-freedrivingincitiesandtheflexibilityfortheoccasionalmid-orlong-distancetriptoareaswithoutcharginginfrastructure.IfPHEVsarechargedfrequentlyanddrivenelectrically,thetechnologycanhelptoreducelocalemissionssignificantly,especiallyinbigcitieswithahighproportionofshortdistancetripsandlow-speeddriving.Additionally,supportingbothBEVsandPHEVswithincentiveswouldenableafasterreplacementoftheconventionalvehicle,triggerafasterbuild-upofcharginginfrastructureandspeedupthetransitiontoE-mobility.InordertopromoteincreasedelectricdrivingofPHEVs,inthispaper,aninnovativeideanamedeBenefitisproposed.TheeBenefitsystemmonitorsandevaluatestheshareofpureelectricdriving.Theevaluationisusedtodecidethelevelofincentivesgiventothecustomer.Inordertoevaluatetheelectricalperformance,severalusagemetricsareanalyzedandcomparedindetail.AnoveralleBenefitsys-temstructureispresentedtorealizethecalculationofthesemetricsandprovideincentivesbacktothecustomer.Wedemonstratethat,withcomparativelylowimplementationeffort,theeBenefitsystemcanbeimplementedusingexistingtechnologieslikeReal-TimeMoni-toring(RTM)andElectronicTollCollection(ETC).WithinBMW,prototypesanddemonstrationprojectswerebuilttoshowthetechnicalfeasibilityoftheeBenefitprogramandtoanalyzewhetherPHEVcustomerscanbemotivatedtochargemoreoftenusingincen-tivesystems.BMWisalsoinvestigatingpossibilitiesofeBenefitinajointOEMprojectledbyCATARC,andtogetherwithtwootherOEMs:SAICandBYD.
