Thispaperfocusonthreequestions:1)Howaccurateisit,2)howtocollectdataand3)what'sthebenefits?Theabstractfocusonmaintenanceneeds-asitswheremostmoneydirectlycanbesaved.TheaccuracywastracedinacorrelationstudywheredatafromLaserIRIsurveysandRoadroidwascompared.ItshowsapossibilitytoreachR2>0.85,butalsothatthecorrelationisdependingonspeedandroadtypes.ItisfullypossibletoreachcorrelationsoverR20.75inproduction.IRIiscurrentlyoftencollectedthroughyearlysurveys.Withastandardcarandasmartphonethedatacollectoptionsbroadens.Thebestoptionsisconsideredas:a)theoperationalmaintenancevehiclesandb)ruralpost-andnewspaperdeliveryvehicles.Crowdsourcingisnotconsideredasagoodoption.Forlowvolumeroads(includingunpavedroads)Roadroidmeansasimple,robustandobjectivemonitoring.Smartphonescanmakeagreatchangeheretodevelopthemaintenancemethods.Forhigh-endroadssmartphonesbenefitsinPerformanceBasedMaintenance(PBM)withnewKeyPerformanceIndicators(KPI)asyoucangetdailyIRIdata.Andyoucanupdatepavementplansafterawinterandspringthaw(orotherdramaticclimateevent)-ortoguideupcomingLasersurveys.
