Inordertodeterminetheheadinjuriessustainedfromballisticimpactorientationandtoinvestigatetheeffectivenessofthecushionedhelmetinprotectingtheheadfromballisticimpact,seriesofballisticimpactsimulationsofFull-MetalJacketed(FMJ)bulletonasubject-specificFEheadmodel,whicharebasedonNationalInstituteofJustice(NIJ)testcriteria.Twodifferentdesignsofhelmetinteriorcushionareadoptedinthisstudy,namelytheOregonAero(OA)foamandthestrap-nettingsystem,Ingeneral,theheadexperienceshighestGaccelerationinrearimpactsamongallimpactorientations.TheFEsimulationsalsoshowthattheuseofOAfoamshelpstoreducefrontalimpactGaccelerationforcesandthusoffersbetterprotectionfromallvariousimpactorientations.TheOAcellularfoamsaremoreeffectiveinlimitingthetransmissionofforcebyabsorbmoreenergy,viaplateaucharacteristicpriortofoamdensification,comparedtothestifferlinearelasticfrontcushionofstrap-nettedhelmet,ThesimulationsalsoshowedboththehelmetspassedWSTC,FMVSScriterionandtheNIJrequirement.
