FiniteElement(FE)modelsofAnthropomorphicTestDevices(ATD),commonlyknownascrashtestdummies,areusedinevaluationoftheautomotivecrashworthinessandensureoccupants'safety.TheHⅢ5thCrashTestDummyisa5thpercentilesmallfemaledummy,whichisemployedinthe2ndrowseatoccupantforthefullwidthand40%ODBfrontalimpactsastheregulatoryrequirementforChina-NCAP(C-NCAP).TheharmonizedversionofthedummyhardwareismadebycombiningcorrespondingformerFTSSandDentondummiestostandardizethehardwareandreducetestvariability.TheFEdevelopmentoftheharmonizedH3-5thdummyfollowedimmediatelythehardwarefinalization.Thoraxisoneofthecrucialcomponentsinthedummytoevaluateoccupants'injuries.ThecurrentstudydescribesdevelopmentofthethoraxfortheharmonizedH3-5thdummy.ThemainenhancementsarecarriedoutinimplementingtheharmonizedSAEjacketandmeetingboth3.0and6.71m/sthoraxcertificationrequirementsaspartoftheregulatoryrequirementsfortheEuroNCAP.Thegeometry,connectivityandinertialpropertiesforthemodelareobtainedfromavailabledrawingsandhardware.Themodel'smaterialpropertiesaredeterminedfromphysicaltestdataafternumericalparameterextractionandverificationthroughtestsimulations,enablingcharacterizationusingthestateoftheartmaterialmodelingtechniques.Themodelwasthenvalidatedagainstaseriesofsub-assemblyandfulldummyleveltests.Selectivevalidationtestsrelatedtothoraxcertification,singleribdroptestandthoraxpendulumimpacttest,areintroducedinthispaper.Theresultshowedahighlevelofpredictivecapabilitiesofthedevelopedthoraxmodel.
